Uknited: Stitching the Country Together
For my senior capstone, I wanted to find a way to bring our communities together in a time of physical distancing and political unrest. I was inspired by the historical events of 2020 that proved just how divided our country is.
Uknited: Stitching the Country Together is a virtual knitting project that is aimed at bringing people together across our nation.
For my color palette, I chose several shades of pink and blue to refer to our political parties as well as several shades of green to make the overall palette warm and inviting. I created a pattern of knit stitches in the form of the United States to further communicate my idea of "stitching the country together".
To participate in Uknited, people across the country have to knit squares and send them in. When a person knits a square, their contribution will be added to the map of United States. This Knitted United States is a visual representation of our connected communities.
The website I created for Uknited explains what the knitting project is and how to participate. There is also a map that is updated with photos of everyone's knit squares and tutorials for how to knit.
The packaging I designed uses the pattern of knit stitches in the form of the United States and language that promotes the connection of our communities.
Inside the packaging is a brochure that has thorough instructions on how to knit with QR codes linking to the Uknited website for the video tutorials.
The Uknited Instagram page features questions that will promote discussion amongst followers and knit squares sent in by participants.
